Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

QWhat is a 4k TV?
A4K TVs are ultra-high definition - they have a horizontal resolution of around 4,000 pixels, which is 4 times higher than ?Full HD?. This means the image will stay sharp even with larger screen sizes.
QWhat is the difference between 4k, Full HD and HD Ready?
AThese 3 are a measurement of the ?resolution? of a TV - how many pixels the screen can display at once, and therefore how sharp the image is. HD Ready TVs have a resolution of around 1280x720 pixels, whereas Full HD TVs have a resolution of 1920x1080 pixels. 4k TVs have a substantially higher density, being somewhere around 3840x2160 pixels. <br> The higher the resolution, the sharper the image will be on large screens. An 80? TV that only supports HD Ready will look muddy and blurry. On the other hand, 4k resolution will be wasted on a small 32? TV, since the screen is too small to make effective use of it.

4K TVs Explained

A 4K TV has the capacity to display movies and TV programs at resolutions 4 times greater than standard High Definition TVs. Despite their name, 4K TVs actually have a resolution just under 4,000 - 3,840 x 2,160 pixels to be precise. It is also known as ‘Ultra HD’, and indeed the image quality is far far better than standard HD TVs. The sheer amount of pixels on the screen allow for a far sharper image, with more details and less ‘muddiness’ or blurring.

Resolution isn’t the only measure of a good picture quality (contrast and colour depth are also crucial) but it’s an excellent place to start. It’s also important to note that 4K resolution will only be fully realised with a large screen size - you’ll need a TV with a screen greater than 40” to really make the best of 4K resolutions. Generally speaking the bigger the display size, the more you’ll appreciate a high resolution - a resolution that appears fine on a 32” screen will suddenly seem jagged and low-detail when viewed on an enormous 60” TV.

Happily 4K TVs are getting more and more common, meaning what was once an expensive luxury can now be got for relatively cheap. So if you’re looking to ditch the chunky old 25” TV you’ve been holding onto for years, now is a great time to upgrade - you’ll be amazed at the improvement in quality a 4K screen will make!
