At 40 times zoom factor, the GZ-E100 has a fairly big optical zoom compared to most of the other video cameras of this age and type. Similar spec video cameras that have been on the market for around the same time as this camcorder have optical zooms of between 10x and 78x, and the average optical zoom is 30x.

If you would prefer a bigger optical zoom then you might want to look at the Panasonic HC-V550 (£299.99) (50x) which is also higher rated.
