Why Has it Scored 77 for Portrait Photography?

Portrait photography is a popular use for everything from small compact cameras to more powerful SLRs. A well-staged photo can capture someone’s feelings and emotions in breathtaking clarity - therefore it’s important to take the time to find a camera that is particularly good at portrait photography.

When ranking our cameras for their skill in taking portrait photos, we’ve concentrated on several key attributes. The most important of these are image resolution, sensor size and image stabilisation. A larger image resolution means the portrait will be more detailed, while the sensor and stabiliser means that the portrait won’t be blurry at all. On top of that, a pre-flash can help reduce the chance of red eye, and smile detection can help find that perfect moment Finally, extras like a handheld remote control or a self timer can help with taking self-portraits and group shots.

Olympus OM-D E-M5 Mark II In-Depth Analysis for Portrait Photography

Maximum Image Resolution

4608 X 3456 Pixels Image Resolution

This digital camera has a maximum image resolution of 4608 x 3456 pixels, which is typical of many latest comparable spec digital cameras.

Image resolution is a measurement of how detailed the photos taken by the camera are. A higher resolution means a single image is comprised of more pixels, leading to greater detail. This is important with portrait cameras, since it allows every nuance and subtlety of the subject, lighting and position to be brought to the fore by the camera, rather than being lost in a low-quality image.

Edit

Image Stabilizer

Has an Image Stabilizer

The OM-D E-M5 Mark II has an image stabilizer. Most of the other recently released medium megapixel digital cameras also have an image stabilizer.

Image stabilisation detects tremors in hand movement when taking the photo, and attempts to compensate for them. This means the resulting photo should have less instances of motion blur, leading to a crisper image.

Edit

Self-Timer

Has a Self-Timer

The OM-D E-M5 Mark II has a self-timer. Most of the other new comparable spec cameras also have a self-timer.

A self-timer can be useful when taking selfies or group shots, since you don't have to be holding the camera to take the shot. Helpful for self-portraits, and including yourself in group portrait shots.

Edit

Optical Sensor Size

Optical Sensor Size

Sorry, we do not know what the optical sensor size of the OM-D E-M5 Mark II is. If you know what the optical sensor size of it is then please tell us.

The optical sensor is responsible for capturing the light coming in through the lens of the camera, which is then converted into a digital image. A larger sensor allows for a far better quality image, with more detail and less noise. Because larger sensors take in more light at once, they require less exposure time, meaning less chance of motion blur. All of these are very important for creating a detailed, crisp portrait photo.

Edit

Pre-Flash

Pre-Flash

Sorry, we do not know if the OM-D E-M5 Mark II has a pre-flash. If you know whether it has a pre-flash then please tell us.

Pre-flash is a small burst of light before the main flash - it causes the subject's pupils to contract, meaning there is less chance of red-eye from the portrait. Very helpful with a portrait camera, since eyes will be a central focus in many of your photos.

Edit

Smile Detection

Smile Detection

Sorry, we do not know if the OM-D E-M5 Mark II features smile detection. If you know whether it features smile detection then please tell us.

Smile detection automatically detects and takes a photo when it registers a smile. A helpful utility in a portrait camera, since it gives you a way to capture your subject as they smile, rather than missing the moment due to poor timing or bad reflexes.

Edit

Handheld Remote Control

Handheld Remote Control

Sorry, we do not know if the OM-D E-M5 Mark II has a handheld remote control. If you know whether it has a handheld remote control then please tell us.

A handheld remote can be useful when taking selfies or group shots, since you don't have to be holding the camera to take the shot. It is helpful for self-portaits, and also for triggering a shot without having to physically touch the camera, reducing the chance of accidental blurring due to movement.

Why Has it Scored 76 for Landscape Photography?

Given the portable nature of cameras, it’s unsurprising that they are used extensively to take photos of beautiful landscapes all over the world - from desolate hills to tropical beaches and everything in between! However not all cameras are equally suited to take landscape photos: here we have tried to rank the best cameras to take stunning landscape shots for your next holiday!

We’ve concentrated on a number of key attributes: most important of these is optical zoom capability, since it allows you to take detailed photos of particular parts of the landscape from a long way away, and still have them come out in good detail. Weight and battery life are also very important, since you may be carrying your camera with your for a long time while walking around - you want it to be light enough to not be a hassle, and with a good strong battery, so it doesn’t run out of juice mid-way through the trip! Finally we have taken into account several important factors, such as environmental protection (especially water and dust resistance) and whether the camera comes with GPS, in order to pin-point exactly where you took the photo for later reference.

Olympus OM-D E-M5 Mark II In-Depth Analysis for Landscape Photography

Optical Zoom

Optical Zoom

Optical zoom is how much the camera is able to enlarge the image it's taking, allowing you to get a close-up of faraway objects. With landscape photography, this means you'll be able to focus in on specific areas of the landscape from far away, in order to achieve the most interesting and unique shot.

Edit

Maximum Image Resolution

4608 X 3456 Pixels Image Resolution

This digital camera has a maximum image resolution of 4608 x 3456 pixels, which is typical of many latest comparable spec digital cameras.

Image resolution is a measurement of how detailed the photos taken by the camera are. A higher resolution means a single image is comprised of more pixels, leading to greater detail. This is important with a landscape cameras, since it allows all the detail from the landscape to be picked out in greater clarity, allowing for a far more visually impressive shot, rather than just a blur of green hills and blue skies.

Edit

Weight

Average Weight

With a weight of 417 grams, the OM-D E-M5 Mark II has a relatively average weight compared to most of the other new medium megapixel digital cameras.

Weight is important for a landscape camera, since finding the perfect shot is going to involve a lot of travel. Therefore a lighter camera is going to be far more comfortable to walk with.

Edit

Battery Life (CIPA Standard)

750 Battery Life (CIPA Standard)

Most of the other new similar spec cameras only take between 190 and 749 battery life (CIPA standard), however the Olympus OM-D E-M5 Mark II takes 750 battery life (CIPA standard).

If you're out and about finding wonderful landscapes to shoot, you don't want to be running out of battery and have to cut your trek short. Therefore a bigger battery life means more shots before you need to recharge the battery.

Edit

GPS (satellite)

Has a GPS (satellite)

The OM-D E-M5 Mark II has a GPS (satellite), unlike most of the other latest medium megapixel digital cameras which do not have a GPS (satellite).

GPS (global positioning system) functionality on your camera means that it will be able to pinpoint exactly where each photo is taken, and record this as metadata on the image. This can be very helpful for landscape photographers, since you'll be able to find out exactly where you took that wonderful shot, rather than having to try and remember where you wandered.

Edit

Dustproof

Dustproof

The OM-D E-M5 Mark II is dustproof, as are most of the other comparable spec digital cameras that have been around for a similar time to this digital camera.

Dust can play absolute havoc with the delicate components of digital cameras. If you are shooting in areas with a lot of sand, such as deserts or beaches, a dustproof camera will help protect against damage to your gear.

Edit

Optical Sensor Size

Optical Sensor Size

Sorry, we do not know what the optical sensor size of the OM-D E-M5 Mark II is. If you know what the optical sensor size of it is then please tell us.

A larger sensor allows for a far better quality image, with more detail and less noise. Because larger sensors take in more light at once, they require less exposure time, meaning less chance of motion blur from trees, planes or other moving elements in the photo.

Edit

Waterproof

Waterproof

Sorry, we do not know if the OM-D E-M5 Mark II is waterproof. If you know whether it is waterproof then please tell us.

Landscape photography means heading outside, and Mother Nature isn't always nice. A waterproof camera means that if you get caught in a sudden downpour, your camera won't be damaged or ruined.

Edit

Electronic Compass

Electronic Compass

Sorry, we do not know if the OM-D E-M5 Mark II has an electronic compass. If you know whether it has an electronic compass then please tell us.

An electronic compass uses a mixture of GPS and an inbuilt magnetic sensor to ascertain what direction the camera is facing when a photo is taken, and records this information as metadata with the image. When used alongside GPS data, it can be used to build up a complete 'map' of photos from a shoot, which can be helpful if you range far and wide taking landscape photos.

Edit

Anti-Dust Function

Why Has it Scored 79 for Everyday Photography?

Camera phones have given us the ability to always have a camera within easy reach, but many people still prefer to carry an actual proper camera around with them - it allows for far better quality photos, and you have a far greater degree of control over the photo you take.

When ranking cameras to use everyday, we’ve concentrated on size and battery life, since you don’t want your camera weighing your down as you wander, and you definitely don’t want it running out of juice! Good optical sensor size and an image stabiliser are also important, since many of your photos will be taken with very short notice, and these will help reduce any instances of blurring in the photo. Finally, a moving display allows you to tilt the display up and down, in order to raise or lower the camera to find interesting angles, while still being able to see the display to frame the shot.

Image Stabilizer

Has an Image Stabilizer

The OM-D E-M5 Mark II has an image stabilizer. Most of the other recently released medium megapixel digital cameras also have an image stabilizer.

An image stabilizer detects and seeks to minimize small judders and movements which could cause the resulting photos to come out blurry or unfocussed. With an everyday camera, you aren't going to have a tripod and will probably be shooting by hand, meaning that anything that reduces judders will help your overall photo quality.

Vari-Angle LCD Display

Sorry, we do not know if the OM-D E-M5 Mark II has a vari-angle LCD display. If you know whether it has a vari-angle LCD display then please tell us.

A vari-angle LCD display means that the camera display is hinged, and can be tilted to allow you to view the screen while holding the camera at odd angles, such as very low to the ground or up above your head. Why Has it Scored 77 for Sports Photography?

Cameras have a long history of being used to document all the dramatic moments, victories and losses of sports matches throughout history. Not all cameras are good for sports photography though, and here we’ve attempted to rank the best ones for you to consider.

One of the most important attributes of a sports photography camera is speed. The players at a game will normally be moving very fast, so you need a camera that will keep up with them and produce clean, unblurry photos. Therefore a fast shutter speed and an image stabiliser will allow you to react fast to sudden events without the end result turning into a blurry mess. Connected to this, a multi burst (or ‘motor drive’) functionality will allow you to take a larger number of photos in a very short space of time - therefore meaning you’ll have a large number of shots to choose from when selecting the perfect photo afterwards. Because you may be taking an awful lot of photos, a good battery life is very important too. Finally, weatherproofing is always a good idea - rain doesn’t always stop play, and you definitely don’t want it to stop your camera!

Olympus OM-D E-M5 Mark II In-Depth Analysis for Sport Photography

Image Stabilizer

Has an Image Stabilizer

The OM-D E-M5 Mark II has an image stabilizer. Most of the other recently released medium megapixel digital cameras also have an image stabilizer.

An image stabilizer works to detect and try and compensate for small judders and movements when taking photos. With sports photography you'll frequently be shooting fast-moving subjects by hand, so there will be a lot of movement from your camera - this system will help to reduce the amount of motion blur from these movements.

Edit

ISO Sensitivities

Supports 100, 200 and 13 More ISO Sensitivities

The number of ISO speeds supported by the Olympus OM-D E-M5 Mark II is more than most digital cameras that have been around for a similar time to it. The most commonly supported ISO sensitivity is 160, but this ISO sensitivity is not supported by this digital camera. The ISO sensitivities 1600, 25600, 100, 200, 3200, 6400 and 12800 are also supported by this camera.

ISO measures how sensitive your camera is to light. A high ISO means that your camera will require less time to fully capture an image. This means that fast-moving subjects - such as those often shot by sports photographers - will be captured quicker, which means less image blur will be introduced, and the resulting photo will be far crisper and sharper.

When shooting a sports game, you'll frequently be taking a very large amount of photos - especially when using a burst or motor drive. Therefore having a bigger battery life means that there isn't a chance your camera will run out of juice mid-game!

Multi Burst Mode

Multi Burst Mode

Sorry, we do not know if the OM-D E-M5 Mark II features multi burst mode. If you know whether it features multi burst mode then please tell us.

Multi-burst mode, also called motor drive, allows the camera to take a large number of shots in a very short amount of time, one after another. This is essential for sports photography, since it means you can shoot 20-30 photos over the course of a few seconds of high motion action, and pick the best one from the results.

Edit

Waterproof

Waterproof

Sorry, we do not know if the OM-D E-M5 Mark II is waterproof. If you know whether it is waterproof then please tell us.

Sports photography means you will frequently be outside, and the weather isn't always kind to football games. Therefore having a waterproof camera means that a sudden downpour won't cause damage to your camera.

Flash Recharging Time

Flash Recharging Time

Sorry, we do not know what the flash recharging time of the OM-D E-M5 Mark II is. If you know what the flash recharging time of it is then please tell us.

This is the amount of time needed for the inbuilt flash to fully recharge between shots. If you are taking lots of shots in quick succession during a night or low-light game, the less time needed between flashes, the more efficient you'll be.
