Capacity

A dedicated freezer is ideal for families that need to store large quantities of frozen food. Often they can be combined with a matching fridge to create a huge fridge freezer combined of two appliances placed next to each other. They key is to make sure that the freezer door is reversible, which will allow your combined fridge freezer unit doors to both open from the middle.

Advances in insulation technology have allowed freezer manufacturers to increase the available space inside modern freezer units. The biggest upright freezers have over 350 litres of internal storage and the largest chest freezer can have nearly 600 litres of internal storage - that's enough to store three supermarket shopping trolleys full of food!

Frost Free Interior

Older freezers and some budget models require periodic defrosting which means switching the freezer off, removing all the food, and catching all the thawing ice in a tray. This is necessary to prevent excessive frost build up inside the freezer and to keep it operating efficiently.

Many freezers have frost free technology. This means that no defrosting is required and the freezer will not frost up over time. They work by controlling the humidity level inside the freezer to prevent frost particles from forming.

Easy Access Drawers

Some freezers come with easy to access pull out drawers. Transparent draw fronts make it easy to see what's stored inside and smooth sliding rails make pulling the drawer out effortless. Look out for deep drawer sizes which can be useful for storing bulky items.

Ice Makers

Built in ice makers are available in some stand alone freezers. Commonly they make the ice in one of the drawers which can then be pulled out and used.

Most automatic ice makers will normally need a plumbed water connection within 1.5m of the freezer. Some freezers may have simpler, semi automatic ice makers that you must fill manually.

Other Features

LED Lighting: These low energy bulbs create bright illumination of all parts of your freezer and produce a very low level of heat.

Rapid Freezing: Rapid freezing lets you temporarily increase the freezing rate of the freezer so that new items freeze more quickly.

Variable Speed Compressors: Multiple speed settings lets the compressor run quietly in normal operation and also creates more consistent internal temperatures.

Digital Controls: Digital temperature controls let you set the internal temperature of the freezer precisely and are easier to use than vague temperature dials.

Warning Alarms: An alarm will sound if the freezer door has accidentally been left open or if the internal temperature of the freezer is too high.

Soft Close Doors: The freezer door gently closes itself as you push the door shut.

Installation Tips

It's best to measure the space that your freezer is to fit in several times to make sure that you don't make a mistake. In determining whether the freezer will fit you should consider the freezer door hinge position and the space required for the thickness of the freezer door when it is opened. Don't forget about the size of any openings or staircases that the freezer will have to pass through to get it to the installation location.

The air temperature around the freezer is important for optimal operation. Most freezers are designed to work inside a heated room, so don't install your freezer in a outbuilding unless it is specifically designed for that purpose. You should also ensure adequate ventilation to the rear of the freezer.

Once your freezer has been delivered you should leave it standing upright for 4 hours before switching it on if it was transported horizontally. If it was transported vertically then standing for 1 hour should be sufficient.

Freezer Prices

We currently list 612 freezers ranging from £50 to £3,650. A new freezer costs on average £509 and 80% of freezers are priced between £149 and £921. The most expensive freezer that we found is the Siemens FI24DP32 at £3,650, and the cheapest is the Iceking TT35AP2 at only £50.

Freezer Brands - Price Range

The highest average freezer price out of all brands is Gaggenau freezers with an average price of £1,240. Gaggenau freezers start at £1,240 and their most expensive freezer costs £1,240.

The second highest average freezer price out of all brands is Siemens freezers with an average price of £1,011. Siemens freezers start at £279 and their most expensive freezer costs £3,650.

Miele freezers start at £360 and their most expensive freezer costs £2,000. The third highest average freezer price out of all brands is Miele freezers with an average price of £975.

Freezer Brands - Average Ratings

We have checked 8 expert reviews and 6,729 user reviews for freezers and used these reviews to calculate the average rating for each brand of freezer. The top three freezer brands are Zanussi, Indesit and Beko. Zanussi has an average rating of 91%, Indesit has an average rating of 91% and Beko has an average rating of 90%.

Biggest Freezer Retailers

The biggest freezer retailer by number of products currently for sale is eBay. We found 344 current freezer offers from eBay. The second biggest retailer is Amazon UK with 341 offers. That means eBay is very close in size to Amazon UK when it comes to freezers. ao is the third biggest retailer with 168 current offers.

When Are Most New Freezers Released?

We looked at the release dates for new freezers over the last 3 years, but couldn't see any obvious trend. In January 2017 91 new freezers were released making it the biggest month that year for new freezer releases. In 2016 most new freezers were released in October, with 169 new freezers released that month. April was the biggest month in 2015 for new freezers, with 103 new freezers released that month.

How Fast Do Freezer Prices Drop After Release?

On average freezers drop in price by 2% in the first 6 months after release. If you are prepared to wait then you could save an average of £8 on a typical £509 new freezer by waiting 6 months before buying.

Freezer Net Capacities

This is the total usable (net) capacity of the freezer, measured in litres.

The freezer net capacities of freezers range from 22L to 1,000L. The freezer net capacities of most freezers range from 60L to 110L. The Liebherr GT6122, which currently retails for £489.00, has the highest freezer net capacity and is a 605L capacity freezer. The freezer with the lowest freezer net capacity is the Zanussi ZFX31400WA, which is a 30L capacity freezer and is available at £99.00.

A higher capacity means that more food can be stored in the freezer at a time.

Types

Upright is the most frequently found type amongst new freezers. We found 1,280 freezers that are upright freezers. Chest is the second most common type amongst new freezers. We found 539 freezers that are chest freezers.

Widths

Comparing all freezers, the widths range from 430mm to 1,861mm. The Liebherr GT 6122 Comfort, which can be purchased for £699.00, has the widest width and is a 1,653mm wide freezer. The freezer with the narrowest width is the Zanussi ZFX31401WA, which is a 439mm wide freezer and currently retails for £180.07.

Heights

The heights of freezers range from 470mm to 2,150mm. The freezer with the tallest height is the Liebherr BGPv 6570, which is a 2,150mm high freezer and can be purchased for £3,050.74. The LEC U50052, which is priced at £109.99, has the shortest height and is a 492mm high freezer.

Energy Efficiency of Freezers

The Energy Efficiency Class of a freezer shows how well it uses energy, and how much is unnecessarily wasted. Products are ranked from G to A++ in terms of how little energy they use compared to the norm.

The most common energy efficiency rating amongst new freezers is A+++. We found 1,697 freezers that have an energy efficiency rating of A+++. B is the second most common energy efficiency rating amongst new freezers. We found 27 freezers that have an energy efficiency rating of B.

A freezer with a better energy efficiency rating will consume less energy whenever they are used, saving you money and making them better for the environment.

Which Are the Cheapest Retailers for Freezers?

The chart below helps you decide which retailer is normally cheapest for buying freezers. For each retailer it shows the total number of freezers where they currently have a market leading price. For each retailer we took all of their prices and looked at what proportion of those prices where the cheapest on the market. The cheapest retailer that we found was eBay. 233 of their freezer prices were the cheapest that could be found anywhere.

Assessing how cheap each retailer is for freezers by counting the number of cheapest prices for that retailer, makes the retailers that offer the greatest number of freezer prices more likely to offer the greatest number of cheapest prices. The chart below considers the proportion of each retailer's freezer prices that are the cheapest compared to other retailers. The cheapest retailer that we found using this approach was eBay. 67.7% of their freezer prices were the cheapest that could be found anywhere.
