AThat very much depends on the size of your family, and how much toast you eat every morning! Most couples and small families will be satisfied with a simple 2-slice toaster, however larger families may find a 4-slice appliance means less waiting around at breakfast!

Buying a New Toaster

Toasters are an absolute necessity in any kitchen - how else are you going to make a proper breakfast? There are numerous choices of toaster available to you - from small 2-slice toasters meant for tiny kitchens and single people, through to enormous 6-slice toasters to serve entire families at once. These are available in all kinds of shapes and colours - allowing you to pick the perfect colour to complement your kitchen.

You can also pick a toaster with a number of different extras - such as a special warmer for buns and croissants, warming & defrost settings, and even a viewing window to watch your toast cook!

Toaster Sizes

This is the most fundamental choice when choosing a toaster - how much bread it can cook at once. Most toasters have 2 slots, allowing 2 pieces of toast to be cooked at once. For most single people or small families this will be enough, since you will rarely need to toast more than 2 pieces of bread at once. However for larger families there are toasters with 4 or even 6 slots - these allow for a far larger amount of bread to be cooked at once.

Some toasters also advertise themselves with ‘long slots’, which mean they have extra-long opening for the bread - which is especially useful for wider, squatter loaves, such as sourdough, or for fitting more slices into a single slot.

Lastly, we have some models of toaster that have a 'high lift' feature built in. This allow you raise the toaster lever up and raise the bread clear of the toasting slots, making it easier to remove. This is a helpful extra if you find yourself frequently toasting crumpets, muffins or small slices of bread.

Custom browning levels & programs

Nearly all major brands of toasters allow you to change the time the bread is toasted for, allowing you to cook the toast to exactly how you like it. Some newer models also contain preset ‘browning levels’, allowing one-touch light/medium/dark browning for your breakfast. While this is not a must-have addition, it can certainly make your life easier first thing in the morning, before your morning coffee has woken you up.

Additionally, many toasters will also contain additional preset programs for defrosting frozen bread, cooking bagels, or for warming toast back up again.

Some more advanced and expensive models of toaster have an added visual flair to them - a glass viewing window in one or both sides of the toaster. As well as serving an aesthetic value, it also allows you to more clearly see how your bread is toasting, so you can pause the toasting at the correct time.

Extras

Finally, some toasters come with additional extras, either purely aesthetic or to provide additional uses. These can include things such as a special warming rack that can be used for buns or croissants, a special holder for making toasties, or a viewing window that allows you to watch your bagels browning as you sip your morning coffee.

We currently list 394 toasters ranging from £7 to £450. A new toaster costs on average £57 and 80% of toasters are priced between £20 and £121. The most expensive toaster that we found is the DeLonghi CTO2003 at £450, and the cheapest is the Essentials C02TW17 at only £7.

Toaster Brands - Price Range

Magimix toasters start at £170 and their most expensive toaster costs £194. The average price of Magimix toasters is £178 which is the highest average price of all toaster brands.

The second highest average toaster price out of all brands is Rowlett toasters with an average price of £160. Rowlett toasters range in price from £149 to £172.

The average price of Bugatti toasters is £143 which is the third highest average price of all toaster brands. Bugatti toasters start at £143 and their most expensive toaster costs £143.

Toaster Brands - Average Ratings

We have checked 41 expert reviews and 8,206 user reviews for toasters and used these reviews to evaluate the average rating for each brand of toaster. The top three toaster brands are Russell Hobbs, Morphy Richards and Dualit. Russell Hobbs has an average rating of 88%, Morphy Richards has an average rating of 81% and Dualit has an average rating of 81%.

Biggest Toaster Retailers

We found 391 current offers for toasters from eBay making it the biggest toaster retailer. That is much bigger than the second biggest retailer, Amazon UK for whom we found 209 current offers for toasters. The third biggest retailer is Currys with 151 current toaster offers.

When Are Most New Toasters Released?

Most new toasters tend to be released between January and February. The biggest month last year for new toaster releases was January, with two new toasters released that month. In February 2018, 20 new toasters were released making it the biggest month that year for new toaster releases. 53 new toasters were released in November 2017 making it the biggest month that year for new toaster releases.

New toasters drop in price by an average of 0% in the first 6 months after they were first released.

The number of slices of bread the toaster can hold at once time.

Across the range of toasters, the slices range from 1 slice to 8 slice. The slices of the majority of toasters range from 2 slice to 3 slice. The toaster with the most slice is the Philips HD258300, which is a toaster that takes 8 slice slices and is on sale for £38.17. The toaster with the least slice is the Techwood TGP-266, which is a toaster that takes 1 slice slice and is available at £29.59.

The most frequently found colour amongst new toasters is black. We found 229 toasters that are toasters that have a black coloured. Stainless steel is the second most popular colour amongst new toasters. We found 198 toasters that are toasters that have a stainless steel coloured.

Which Are the Cheapest Retailers for Toasters?

The chart below helps you decide which retailer is normally cheapest for buying toasters. For each retailer it shows the total number of toasters where they currently have a market leading price. For each retailer we took all of their prices and looked at what proportion of those prices where the cheapest on the market. The cheapest retailer that we found was eBay. 240 of their toaster prices were the cheapest that could be found anywhere.

Assessing how cheap each retailer is for toasters by counting the number of cheapest prices for that retailer, makes the retailers that offer the greatest number of toaster prices more likely to offer the greatest number of cheapest prices. The chart below considers the proportion of each retailer's toaster prices that are the cheapest compared to other retailers. The cheapest retailer that we found using this approach was eBay. 61.4% of their toaster prices were the cheapest that could be found anywhere.
