Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

QHow are TV displays measured?
AThe size of a TV is dictated by the diagonal diameter of the screen. This is calculated by measuring from the top left to bottom right of the screen itself - the measurement doesn't include the bezel (the casing around the screen) or any extras - just the screen.
QWhat is the difference between 4k, Full HD and HD Ready?
AThese 3 are a measurement of the "resolution" of a TV - how many pixels the screen can display at once, and therefore how sharp the image is. HD Ready TVs have a resolution of around 1280x720 pixels, whereas Full HD TVs have a resolution of 1920x1080 pixels. 4k TVs have a substantially higher density, being somewhere around 3840x2160 pixels.

The higher the resolution, the sharper the image will be on large screens. An 80 inch TV that only supports HD Ready will look muddy and blurry. On the other hand, 4k resolution will be wasted on a small 3 inch TV, since the screen is too small to make effective use of it.
QWhat is a Smart TV?
AA Smart TV has a net connection, and the ability to run apps like a computer. This means that as well as watching TV, you can use the device to access sites such as YouTube or Netflix, display news updates, browse social media and play music using apps such as Spotify.
QWhat is the difference between LCD & LED TVs?
ALiquid Crystal Displays (LCD) TVs work by shining light through a matrix of coloured liquid cells, whereas Light Emitting Diodes (LED) TVs utilise an enormous amount of tiny LED lights to shine light through, rather than a small number of lamps. LCD TVs still make up the largest amount of TVs on the market, but LED TVs tend to be significantly thinner and lighter, and give a better backlight coverage due to the larger number of lamps.

TVs For Film

Televisions are excellent for watching films - from quiet emotional dramas to big blockbuster explosion fests. Watching films on a TV can take several forms: you can watch on terrestrial channels such as BBC or ITV, on the Video On Demand services such as iPlayer or Netflix, or just pop in a DVD!

Films can take many different forms - from brightly-coloured action movies with fast action, to dimly lit noir thrillers that take place 99% at night. Therefore we have tried to take into account all the factors that would be important across all types of movies when picking the best TVs for watching films. We’ve concentrated on the most important attributes for films. These include contrast ratio and local dimming, which allow the dark colours on the screen to look deeper and richer - helpful for nighttime scenes. Also the screen resolution plays a part - 4K and higher resolutions mean that the image will be clearer and more detailed. Finally the size of the screen is also important - explosions and big dramatic reveals are so much more effective when you don’t have to squint to see the screen!

How to Choose a TV That is Good for Watching Films

Typical Contrast Ratio

'Contrast Ratio' is a measure of the image contrast that the TV is capable of producing - it is the difference between the brightness of the darkest black and brightest white that the TV can produce. The higher the contrast ratio the better the contrast.

Many sci-fi, action and horror films have very dark scenes, which can appear foggy on some TVs. A high contrast ratio means the dark scenes in films are great quality and it is still possible to see all the detail.

Local Dimming

'Local Dimming' on a TV is a function that dims certain sections of the backlight to control the level of light/color intensity in a given part of the screen.

Cheap TVs use a fixed back light which remains the same brightness across the entire screen. Local dimming means that the backlight brightness varies across the screen so that bright areas remain bright but dark areas are still dark. The net result is a higher contrast ratio which will films appear more punchy and life like.

High Dynamic Range Imaging (HDRI)

High Dynamic Range Imaging (HDRI) on a TV is a system that allows preserves details in the darkest and brightest areas of the screen that are lost using standard display methods.

Films watched on a TV with High Dynamic Range (HDR) will appear brighter and more life like. The HDR technology preserves details and colours in the dark and bright areas of the screen so that no detail is lost from the original film.

OLED/QLED Technology

OLED and QLED TVs use organic material that creates light when electricity is passed through it. This means that they do not require a back light, unlike standard LED TVs.

OLED technology has an infinite contrast ratio. This means that the blacks are absolutely black as no light at all is emitted from this part of the screen. The result is that dark scenes in films are super clear.

HD Type

HD Type on a TV refers to the type of high definition image that the TV is capable of displaying (e.g. Full HD, 4K Ultra HD).

A high display resolution means that details in films will appear much sharper. Most films are available in Full HD (1920x1080) as standard these days and bluray players will play content in Full HD. Some streaming services are starting to provide content in even higher resolution such as 4K (3840x2160). Most cinemas project films in either 2K (1048x1080) or 4K.

Video App

Video Apps (otherwise called Video On Demand) are apps on a Smart TV that allows users to select from a wide variety of films and television programs to watch when they want, rather than following a traditional broadcasting schedule. Current examples include BBC iPlayer, Netflix or YouTube.

Built in video apps are a great way of quickly watching films on your TV. Popular apps such as Netflix and Amazon Prime Video will stream films straight to your TV from the internet without any additional boxes or devices.

Display Diagonal

‘Display Diagonal’ is the measure of the size of the TV screen from top-left to bottom-right corner, excluding any frame or border.

For a truly immersive, cinema like experience it's hard to beat a massive screen. A large screen will fill a larger proportion of your field of vision and make you feel more absorbed in the film.
