Of those TVs that do require glasses, there are two main types of 3D technology: passive and active. Passive 3D uses glasses similar to those that you wear in the cinema. The glasses have polarised lenses which ensure that the correct image is displayed to each eye. The main advantage of passive 3D is that the glasses are very light and comfortable to wear, but it can result in a less bright image. Active 3D uses battery powered glasses which control active shutters in each lens. These shutters constantly open and close very quickly in sync with two different images that are being displayed by the TV. This ensures that the correct image is displayed to each eye. The main advantage of active 3D is that the image is brighter, however the glasses are heavier and more expensive.

3D compatible TVs allow you to watch 3D content. For most TVs you will need to wear special glasses to see the 3D effect.
